For those who have always drunk coffee, it may come as a bit of a surprise, but somewhat of a no brainer, that coffee beans are quite edible- though fairly potent! A few of these in the morning would perk you right up for the rest of the day. You can get them coated in chocolate to take the edge off, or even grind them up and enjoy them with ice cream- check out this quick and easy recipe for vanilla ice cream with a bite.


  • 4 tablespoons coffee beans

  • 100g hazelnuts

  • 1x100g bar of good quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa)

  • good quality vanilla ice cream


  • Using a food processor, blitz the coffee beans, then add the hazelnuts and blitz into a powder.

  • Bash the chocolate (still in the wrapper) against the work surface to break it up.

  • Add it to the food processor and whiz again, then put the powder mixture into a bowl.

  • Roll scoops of ice cream in the powder to get a good covering, and then enjoy!
