There's no time for dawdling through life in the twenty first century. There are cereal and milk bars for those who don't have the time to actually sit down and eat a bowl of cereal. I mean all that opening of cupboards, boxes and fridges can be such a drag! But what about your cup of coffee? Even for a cup of instant you've got to wait for the kettle to boil, unscrew the lid on the coffee jar, choose a mug, etcetera, etcetera...

Well it looks like that tiresome little ritual could soon be replaced by 'Sprayable Energy', a product that lets you spritz your skin with caffeine for an immediate boost. To be fair, the U.S. biochemist who's been developing the idea into a workable product, is motivated by the fact that some people just don't like the taste of coffee that much and that coffee's reviving effect isn't necessarily terribly even either. A dose of Ben Yu's product sprayed onto the skin like a perfume will contain only a quarter of the caffeine of a typical cup of coffee, but with a longer lasting and more even boost. Yu's father, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry, helped his son to come up with a form of caffeine that could be absorbed by the skin, because unsurprisingly you can't just daub yourself with a coffee soaked cotton wool pad and expect anything other than slight staining.

The product is patent pending in the U.S. and may also have Food and Drug Administration hoops to jump through, so best hold onto your jar of coffee for now. And if you love the smell of coffee the odourless spritz may not be for you anyway. As for me, I'm hoping to go down as one of the great dawdlers of the the age, so such a rapid caffeine fix just won't do!
