Peppermint tea is one of those roguish tisanes muscling in on the popularity of the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant. Like tea though, the drink is made by infusing peppermint leaves in boiling water.

Many tisanes are often enjoyed for supposed health benefits, having been established as folksy herbal remedies for long periods of time- peppermint tea is one such example. Some recent scientific studies have shown that there may be some truth to the long established beliefs of peppermint's many healing properties. Research suggests it can help to alleviate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, and also points towards its potential as an antispasmodic- something that reduces muscle spasms. Whilst not quite so clearly established, it is often used to help reduce nausea, diarrhoea and headaches. Less researched but still touted uses include using it to help with asthma and the common cold.

The reason for peppermint's health benefits are because of the presence of menthol, which has many uses- including those above, it is used as a decongestant, as an analgesic (pain killer), as a cooling balm for things like sun burn, and even as a pesticide. As with almost any medicine though, it is important to note that menthol, and therefore peppermint tea, is not recommended for those who suffer from acid reflux/ heart burn.
