As the collective health consciousness of the nation heads ever onwards, a switch from white sugar to a sweetener like honey has presented itself as an easy change to make. There are a few benefits to be had from this change - whilst they're not present in large amounts, honey does contain more nutrients than white sugar does. It also contains simpler sugar molecules, which are easier on our digestive tract. The idea that it might make you less fat is a false one though- sugar is sugar, and it still contains plenty of calories. If you really want to be healthier, just cut the sweeteners out altogether!

Humans have been enjoying honey for a long time. The earliest signs of its use come from an 8,000 year old cave painting in Spain, potraying human figures carrying baskets gathering honey. It is likely that the gathering of honey goes back much further than that however. Ancient remains of honey have also been found in jars inside tombs built around 5,000 years ago in Georgia. Its use has been found across a myriad of ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, China, India and Rome, along with the region of Mesoamerica. Literary evidence of its use can be found thanks to Pliny the Elder, the Ancient Roman author and philosopher.

Despite honey's success over thousands of years as a sweetener, it was rapidly supplanted by sugar after sugarcane and sugar beet were used as cash crops. Many European countries established colonies for the purpose of growing such crops, and their industrialization left honey in the lurch. Perhaps our bid for a (slightly) healthier way of life will see it make more of a come back in every day life.
